Women empowerment will need a lot more than tokenism and political expediency

Botswana still has a long way to go to a day when women will have an equal seat at the top table.

There are many reasons for that.

Much of it is sociological.

We live in a society that is patriarchal.

That patriarchy, we need to emphasise is historical.

And because it bestows power on men, it is very unlikely that we shall see men voluntarily doing things that will lead to them relinquishing that power in favour of women.

Instead what we often see is nothing short of tokenism – motivated by political opportunism and expediency.
