A Zimbabwean national has been admitted to Francistown’s Nyangabwe Referral Hospital after he was shot by Selebe Phikwe prison wardens during an escape attempt on Sunday night.
Senior Superintendent Wamorena Ramolefhe of the Department of Prisons and rehabilitation confirmed the incident, saying that the prisoner, who was injured, was shot after he ignored several warning shots.
“The prisoner ignored warning shots that were fired at him by prison wardens before he was shot and wounded,” he said.
He said that one of the prisoners, also a Zimbabwean national, was immediately captured whilst the other one is still at large and they are searching for him round the clock.
Asked the condition of the shot prisoner, Ramolefhe said that he is not at liberty to discuss such information with the press.
“I am sorry I cannot discuss such information with you,” he said, adding that internal investigations were being carried out in the Department and that they had also reported the incident to the police who will also carry out their investigations into the incident.
On other matters relating to escaped prisoners, Ramolefhe said that they are also still searching for four Botswana nationals who escaped from Molepolole Prison.
The total number of prisoners who escaped was initially seven but three have since been re-arrested.
