Analysts fear goals galore is bad for football

Most teams in the be-MOBILE Premier League are left with roughly one match before the end of the first round. Already there is tough competition among five teams and if these can carry their consistency to the second round, the league will take an interesting turn.

The five teams are league leaders, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Township Rollers, BMC and Nico United. Township Rollers and Centre Chiefs have been scoring an avalanche of goals against several teams, leading to fans and pundits questioning whether this is good or bad for Botswana football.

Just this past week, Mochudi Centre Chiefs thrashed Police XI by seven goals to two. Police XI are the very same team that two weeks ago were defeated by Township Rollers, also by six goals. Some memorable scorelines include the thrashing by eight goals of Mogoditshane Fighters by Centre Chiefs, the same team Rollers scored six against. Centre Chiefs also once rippled Serowe side Miscellaneous by five goals.

Currently Mochudi Centre Chiefs have scored a total of 48 goals from 13 matches while Rollers have scored 31 from 12 matches. Mochudi Centre Chiefs attacking midfielder, Joel Mogorosi, is the current the leading goal scorer with 18 goals. Miscellaneous coach, Teenage Mpote sees the development as good for football saying it shows that teams have quality players and they are using every oppourtunity they get to score.

“Of course it is not good for a team to concede so many goals but on the other it shows the quality other teams have. If you look at both Township Rollers and Centre Chiefs they have quality players who even play for the national team. Also most of their players came through the developmental ranks of youth teams,” he said.

For his part, BMC coach, Daniel Nare made it categorically clear that the situation is not good for local football at all. He said it is like a one man show where only two teams always score more goals against some teams. Nare also said this shows that somewhere something is wrong in the Premier League.

“When Rollers won the league for the past two seasons, they never won with an avalanche of goals we are seeing now. It is not good for teams to concede seven to eight goals in the Premier League,” he said.

Nare also emphasised that he does not take anything from both Rollers and Centre Chiefs because they have quality any team would want. He stressed that Centre Chiefs players have been together for a long time and understand each other easily.
