Batswana professionals climb Kilimanjaro to save lives

A group of 10 professionals, brought together by a shared interest in health, fitness, and rigorous exercise, has decided to utilise their passion for the benefit of those who may need resources the most in the journey of life.

The eight men and two women have constituted themselves into an organisation called Tshwaragano Adventure Trust. The group comprises Tawana Gaolathe (Chairman), Dr Roselyn Mosha (Deputy Chairperson), Marilyn Mosha (Secretary), Mahube Mpugwa, Bakang Tsheboagae, Moraki Mokgosana, Nelson Nareetsile, Mesh Moeti, Tigele Mokobi and Charles Mmelesi.

Gaolathe, the Trust’s chairman, has explained that the organisation is meant to promote a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, as well as to raise funds for various needy and charitable causes through activities that demand rigorous physical and mental challenge.

Having taken part in various fitness activities such as this year’s Lobatse Marathon, Steinmetz Gaborone Marathon, Mascom Phikwe Marathon, King of the Hill Race, as well as some bicycle races, they have now set their eyes on reaching Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Gaolathe says the Kilimanjaro expedition will also be a fundraising initiative whose beneficiary will be the Cancer Association of Botswana (CAB).

“We also want to use this expedition to complement existing cancer awareness campaigns,” said Gaolathe.

The expedition takes place in September, and it will entail a minimum of three days to reach the mountain’s peak and two days to return to the base.
