Three men accused of murdering a Zimbabwean national were last week arraigned before the Gaborone Magistrate court on a single count of murder.
A member of the Botswana Defense Force is among them.
The charge sheet states that the accused persons (Tebogo, 25; Kabelo Ikula,25 and a member of BDF stationed at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks; and Keorapetse Babusi, 23) between the 14th and 15th of this month at Mmopane in the Kweneng District murdered Thembankosi Dube.
The station commander of Sir Seretse Khama Police Station, Superintendent Bannetse Keakile, said that Mmopane Village has now become a hot spot because of the number of various criminal activities that have been occurring often since sometime last year.
“It is of concern and we as the police have come out with a strategy that addresses how the police can root out criminal activities that are terrorizing the residents but in-order for the strategy to work, we have already met with tribal authority to assist us,” he said.
Keakile stated that three men were arrested after they allegedly murdered a Zimbabwean national who was running a small business in the area.
He further stated that the investigations are ongoing and the number of suspects arrested may increase, depending on the outcome of the investigations.
The state prosecutor, Sub Inspector Galekhuti Mashamba, told the court that the matter is fresh and investigations are still ongoing and asked the court that the accused persons be remanded in protective custody as it had emerged that there are tensions between the families of the accused persons.
The trio is scheduled to appear before court month end at which the prosecution will update the court about developments in the case.
