BIUST alumni reject renaming institution after Mogae

The proposed renaming of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) has triggered resistance from its alumni as they accuse the government of advancing consultations with key stakeholders before formally hearing their views.

In a statement dated 8 October 2026, the BIUST Alumni Association (BAA) Executive Committee declared its opposition to the proposal signalling a potential showdown over the government’s plans to honour the late third president, Festus Gontebanye Mogae.

“The BAA Executive does not support the renaming of BIUST, and we will not rest until this idea is laid to rest,” said association chairperson Desmond  Munyadzwe.
