BMC CEO to launch Ghanzi show

Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) Chief Executive Officer, Dr. David Falepau, is expected to launch the Ghanzi District Show 2011, which will be held from June 23-25.

Ghanzi District Commissioner, Utlwang Kerekang, confirmed Dr. Falepau’s presence as the guest speaker at the show. She said that the Ghanzi Show is expected to attract plenty of stalls for exhibitors to market their products and brand.

According to Kerekang, farmers are expected to share ideas and knowledge as they will get the opportunity to see how other farmers are managing and breeding their stock. She said on the other hand consumers will have choice as there will be plenty of products.

Farmers will be expected to benchmark during this time.

“The outbreak of Foot and Mouth has not affected the farmers in Ghanzi at all, here business is as usual,” said Kerekang.

She stated that this year’s theme is ‘Diversified Agricultural Production; A key to food security and sustainable economic development’.

Kerekang added that the theme is relevant in the District as farmers in Ghanzi have been
concentrating on pastoral farming from time immemorial and now due to outbreak of animal diseases, arable farming seems to be the solution to the farmer and the nation at large.

“The field produce can go a long way in reducing food shortage in the District and nation at large,” said Kerekang.

She said they are expecting 720 crop exhibitors compared to 500 last year, with 27 compared to 20 last year being livestock exhibitors; 220 goats, 50 sheep, 160 cattle.

According the Kerekang, other activities expected to take place at the Ghanzi District Show include Botswana Housing Corporation top 8 football final tournament on June 25.

She stated that cattle parade, touring of stalls, and competition of stalls and auctioneering of livestock will be part of the event.

“Every year, the farmers from Namibia and South Africa attend our show in order to benchmark,” said Kerekang.
