There are unconfirmed reports that Selibe-Phikwe Town Mayor, Lekang Mukokomani, defected to the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD). Some BMD officials who wished to remain anonymous have confirmed Mukokomani’s membership to the party.
Reliable source say Mukokomani has applied for BMD membership. It is understood that the BMD is in the process of completing his application.  Sources have revealed that he had held a meeting to bid his people farewell.
Another source has revealed that Mukokomani did not attend the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) annual National Council, which was held in Gaborone over the weekend.
The BMD member said the BMD has for a long time been waiting for Mukokomani to tender his resignation to the BDP.  He said Mukokomani has been holding talks with the BMD to join the political party.
Contacted by The Telegraph, Mukokomani said he was not yet ready to discuss his political career matters at that moment. He stated that he will be in a position to discuss the matter sometime next week. He, however, did not confirm or deny his defection to the BMD.
“I am not on duty and I will get back to you soon, I am on other engagements,” said Mukokomani.
Contacted for comment, the BMD Interim Coordinator-National Mobilization, Kabo Morwaeng, would also not confirm or deny the councilor’s alleged defection to the BMD. He stated that the BMD welcomes everybody who wants to join the party anytime they want the party membership.
Sources have revealed that Mukokomani does not see eye to eye with democrats in the council who recently passed a motion of no confidence on him.
Two other Selibe-Phikwe Town Councilors joined the BMD from BDP and BCP recently, a few days before the postponement of the inaugural congress. Selibe Phikwe East Councilor for Botshabelo Ward, Kosi Matshaba, and Councilor for Gaborone North’s Boikhutso Ward, Tidimalo Thunthung, defected to the BMD a few weeks ago.
Since last year after the formation of the BMD, several councilors have defected from the ruling party (BDP) and other opposition parties to join the BMD.
The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) deputy executive secretary, Lee Lesetedi, said he was not aware of Mukokomani’s resignation from the party. He stated that he did not receive any resignation letter from Mayor Mukokomani.
