BOCCIM, Trade ministry sign MoU

The Botswana Chamber Of Commerce Manpower and Industry (BOCCIM) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry signed a Memorandum Of Understanding, laying the foundations for the private and public sectors to work together to achieve economic development.

“The MOU marks a link that will ensure that the public and private sectors work together to achieve a conducive business atmosphere, and drive economic diversification, citizen economic empowerment and the implementation of initiatives that will have significant, positive impact on the growth of Botswana private sector,” said BOCCIM President, Alex Monchusi.

He added that the MOU signed will help government and eliminate the red tape that the private sector often experiences.

Monchusi said the private sector has been endlessly complaining about government’s delaying in implementing policy and institutional frameworks that promote partnership projects meant to enhance viable and sustainable citizen-owned enterprises.

According to the spirit of the agreement , the partnership will help reduce the cost of doing business, adding that the private sector will now have a stronger role in trade negotiations and promote foreign and local investments in partnerships with government.

“The partnership is an opportunity to enhance the private sector by allowing businesses to become the economy’s engine growth,” said Monchusi. He said the private sector will now have a stronger role in trade negotiations and collaborate with government and promote foreign direct investment.”

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dorcus Makgato-Malesu, said the relationship between BOCCIM and MTI should grow and become equitable partners and allow for equitable distribution of resources.

“The Private sector cannot do it alone; there should be a symbiotic relationship between government and the private sector,” she said.
