When it comes to President Duma Boko and former President Lt Gen Ian Khama’s relationship, things are not always what they seem – even elephant is a four-letter word. The elephants’ issue is one of those subjects the two strange bedfellows cannot bring up in polite company without spoiling the mood around the table. While Boko recently nailed his colors to the hunting mast, Khama on the other hand is an enthusiastic conservationist. In 2014 he became the only Southern African leader to introduce a complete ban on elephant trophy hunting. He was also the only regional leader to support the ban on ivory trade imposed by CITES, the global Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
