The Government of Botswana’s budget transparency is under scrutiny as new findings reveal a concerning trend of increasing secrecy. Citing the latest Open Budget Index (OBI) results, UNICEF notes that Botswana’s budget transparency score has dropped to 34 out of 100 in 2021, down from 38 in 2019, marking a significant regression in the country’s commitment to fiscal openness.
UNICEF’s recent analysis of Botswana’s national budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year has also highlighted further issues, particularly regarding public involvement in the budgeting process. The report notes that the public participation score, which reflects how much input citizens have in the budgetary process, fell from 9 to a meager 6 out of 100 during the same period.
