Consumers in Botswana are on the verge of a dramatic electricity price surge of up to 100 percent as government quietly begins implementing its plan to eliminate subsidies across consumer categories in line with commitments under the Botswana National Energy Compact Mission recently published by the World Bank.
The document, compiled by the Government of Botswana, lays out an aggressive roadmap for achieving cost-reflective electricity tariffs by mid-2026-meaning consumers will pay the full cost of power production and supply, with only the poor and vulnerable shielded under a proposed “social tariff.”
