CAAB Declares Airlink Unauthorised to Operate Gaborone-Cape Town Route

The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) has issued a warning to Airlink (Pty) Ltd, asserting that the airline is not authorised to operate flights between Gaborone and Cape Town. This announcement follows concerns raised by the CAAB over the airline’s advertisement and sale of tickets for the unauthorised route.

In an official statement released on 12th August 2024, the CAAB confirmed that Airlink has violated Regulations 5 and 7 of the Civil Aviation (Licensing of Air Services) Regulations, 2012. As a result, the airline has been fined for non-compliance and instructed to immediately withdraw all advertisements related to the Gaborone-Cape Town route. Additionally, Airlink has been ordered to cease the sale of tickets for the route with immediate effect.

“The Authority’s role is to protect consumers and the public by encouraging compliance with civil aviation regulations. Issues of non-compliance are taken seriously and addressed severely,” the statement read.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) is a statutory body established under the Civil Aviation Authority Act of 2004 and continued under the Civil Aviation Act No. 11 of 2011. The Authority is responsible for promoting the safe, regular, secure, and efficient use of civil aviation in Botswana. It also regulates air transport, provides air navigation services, manages airports, and advises the government on all aspects of civil aviation.

The CAAB oversees the operations of key airports in Botswana, including Sir Seretse Khama, Kasane, PG Matante, and Maun International Airports, as well as other strategic airfields across the country.
