For weeks, President Duma Boko was the only show in town, relentlessly championing Botswana’s bid for majority control in De Beers as Anglo American prepares to exit.

Botswana’s president seemed to be the only voice that mattered in the high-stakes diamond deal. He hogged the global spotlight as the pre-eminent force that shifted Botswana’s ambition, from a fringe pursuit to what appeared to be a slam dunk. That was until Angola’s President João Lourenço emerged from the shadows and tried to steal Boko’s show.
