In April 1994 the African Nation Congress came to power following an election that to this day continues to be remembered with fondness.
The ANC, that icon of liberation movements had finally defeated the National Party that had since 1948 been the public face of apartheid in South Africa.
And the revered Nelson Mandela became the first president of the democratic South Africa.
He had spent 27 years in jail for his liberation efforts to get a non-racial South Africa.
