As a way of celebrating its 20th anniversary, mobile network operator – Mascom Wireless ÔÇô saw it fit to extend the celebratory mood to cycling by increasing the prize money for the winners of the upcoming 4th annual Mascom Cycle Challenge.
According to the company’s Brand and Communications Manager, Kushatha Mosojane, a prize purse of P10 000 will be given to the first man and woman to cross the finishing line first in the Mascom Cycle Challenge 120km open section race.
“We believe this will be an added incentive for the participants and even raise the level of competition amongst themselves. As a continuation from the 2017 event, the podium finishers will also get the famous yellow cycling jersey,” Mosojane said.
Speaking at the launch of the sponsorship, Mosojane highlighted that the local telecommunications giant’s continued support of cycling showcases the company’s effort to improve participation in cycling as a sport in the country.
She said Mascom will sponsor the upcoming event to the tune of P250 000, with the sponsorship coming in cash and in kind.
Mosojane revealed that this year they are targeting a higher number of competitors than the previous challenge in 2017 which attracted 97 cyclists.
Along with the organisers, Mosojane said for this year’s event, they are targeting to have at least 200 cyclists taking part in the challenge under the 110km and the 60 km race categories. The Mascom Brand and Communications Manager said she hopes the sponsorship will go a long way in assisting the race organisers to hold a world class event and also to reach as many cycling enthusiasts to encourage them to sign-up in numbers.
“As we prepare for the challenge we promise to deliver a professional and well organised race. Mascom would like to thank our partners Tsela Riders for their contribution in anchoring Cycling as a sport in Botswana,” Mosojane concluded.
Meanwhile, the organisers have revealed the routes for this year’s edition. The main race which is the 120km open, will see riders cycle from ‘The Three Dikgosi Monument’ in Gaborone CBD to Malotwane in Kgatleng and back.
Competitors in the 60km category on the other hand will start their race at the CBD and go to Bokaa traffic lights and back to the starting point.
The Mascom Cycle Challenge, which is a partnership between Mascom wireless and Tsela Riders Cycling Club will be held on the 16th of September 2018.
