Champions tumble in Metropolitan chess championship

April 7 2010: Defending champions in Metropolitan Botswana’s National Chess Championships, Providence Oatlhotse and Boikhutso Mudongo, this weekend failed to defend their titles, which they have been holding for the last two years.

The two’s two year reign was shattered by Ontiretse Sabure of Poisonous Snakes and Gaealafshwe Barileng of Mobile Chess Club.

In the women section, last year’s champion Boikhutso Mudongo came second to Sabure while Mbakwa Faith of Mobile Chess Club got position three. In the Open section, Khetho Phemelo came second whilst last year’s champion Oatlhotse Providence trailed behind at position three.

Ontiretse Sabure walked away with P3, 000 and Gaealafshwe Barileng pocketed P5, 000. Metropolitan Botswana has been sponsoring the chess championship for the last four years.
This year they forked out a whooping P 60 000 for the championship.
