A five-year-old girl drowned in a manhole at Segoditshane in Broadhurst while swimming with her friends last week.
BroadHurst Police Officer, Detective Assistant Superintendent (CID) Madziba Duna said that after one of them fell into the manhole, the other 6-year-old ran to seek help and a passerby called 999 for help.
Duna said they immediately engaged the Fire Brigade and BDF scuba divers for a search.
“In less than an hour, we managed to retrieve her,” said Duna. “But unfortunately, she was certified dead at Princess Marina Hospital.”
He explained that the depth of the manhole is about two metres and that the place was not secure, with no warning signs.
