Leading economists are calling for the shutdown of the troubled Morupule B Power Station, arguing that Botswana’s energy policies are in disarray with key government ministries pulling in opposite directions.
A research by economists at Econsult found that the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, along with the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), continues to push for expanded coal-fired power generation, including additional investments in the Morupule B facility. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is however advocating for a reduction in coal dependency, in line with global climate commitments and seeking more sustainable energy solutions.
