The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Botswana, Zia Choudhury, has expressed concern about Botswana’s vote against a resolution that saw over two-thirds of the United Nations membership vote in favour of a moratorium on executions with the goal of outlawing the death penalty as a legitimate punishment under international law.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the 10th resolution for a moratorium on the use of the death penalty with 130 votes in favour out of the 193 UN member states, 32 votes against (including Botswana), 22 abstentions and 9 absent.
