Diamond crisis pushes Botswana to beggar status

Botswana which has long been celebrated as a model of prudent diamond-led development now finds itself at the mercy of foreign donors as the country grapples with a deepening diamond crisis. In recent weeks the United Arab Emirates detailed how it dispatched an urgent relief aircraft loaded with medical supplies, while Antwerp’s powerful diamond trading community announced a humanitarian contribution to support Botswana’s strained public services.
