The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is facing one of its most turbulent times following President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s decision to suspend Dr. Edwin Dikoloti.
The Goodhope-Mmathethe constituency has become the epicenter of BDP tensions, with Masisi’s preference for Finance Minister Peggy Serame causing unrest among party members and sparking fears of a mass exodus of BDP members. Council candidates in the constituency are also threatening to run as independents.
The BDP’s Central Committee’s controversial decision to disqualify Dikoloti from contesting and hand over the candidacy to Serame, had already caused divisions within the Party. Dikoloti, who had initially won the primary elections, filed to challenge the Central Committee at the High Court this past Wednesday September 25, 2024 seeking redress. His lawsuit was however to be met with a suspension letter from President Masisi. The letter, issued while Masisi was attending the United Nations General Assembly in Washington (US) accused Dikoloti of “misconduct” related to the primary elections. The letter, which was vague about the specific nature of the misconduct, left many questioning Masisi’s motivations.
