Experts warn government against higher ‘punitive’ taxes

Economy experts at the recent FNB Botswana Budget Review have cautioned government against introducing punitive taxes as a strategy to revive the economy, warning that poorly structured tax measures could deter much-needed investment.

The experts said taxation initiatives must be clear, predictable and simple if Botswana is to attract both local and foreign investors. They argued that tax policy should first create an enabling environment that encourages participation in the economy, with enforcement and penalties applied only when investors fail to meet clearly defined expectations.
