Floods wreck havoc in Southern District

A Botswana railways goods train traveling from Mafikeng to Botswana derailed on Monday due heavy rains that have been pounding the southern part of the country since Sunday.

Commenting on the incident, Transport and Communications minister  Kitso Mokaila described the incident as a disaster.

‘This is not only a loss of a government asset but a tragedy. We are eagerly waiting to establish what the reasons behind the collapse of this dam are. It is after investigations that we will be able to make an informed opinion and give the nation an explanation, for now we don’t want to speculate,’ said Mokaila. No causalities have been recorded but employees who were travelling in the train have been treated for trauma.

Meanwhile the Lobatse-Gaborone has been closed after a bridge along Nywane dam partially collapsed and the public has been advised not to use the road in question. Taung-Ramotswa road was also closed due to heavy rains.
