The serious crime squad is battling to recover former Permanent Secretary Elvidge Mhlauli’s P1 million from con artists.
Mhlauli gave the con artists the money after they approached him asking for financial assistance to fund a tender.
Detective Superintendent Chifana Toitoi of Serious Crime Squad confirmed the case, saying they have not yet recovered a single thebe from the suspects.
“We are currently interrogating a middle aged man in the matter. But we have not recovered any of the money. Investigations are complete, and the docket will be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions” he said.
Mhlauli also confirmed the matter, saying he reported the suspect to the police after he refused to repay him.
“It is true that a certain gentleman approached me to seek financial assistance. He has now failed to pay me back, and I have reported the matter to the police” he said.
He said the suspect approached him asking for P1 million to finance a tender, with the promise that he will pay him back as soon as he has been paid.
