Front runner in BR top post suspended

Botswana Railways front runner in the contest to fill the vacant Chief Executive Officer position, Hobona Tobedza, has been suspended from work indefinitely following allegations of conflict of interest.

Botswana Railways board convened recently to discuss the forensic report which has long been swept under the carpet and described as “classified information”. It was at that meeting where it was decided to suspend Tobedza who is also the parastatal’s financial director.

It is alleged that the board is divided over the report in which other members alleged that the matter should have been released a long time ago while other members suggested that the matter should be dealt with internally.

BR acting Chief Executive Officer, Taolo Sebonego, confirmed the suspension but would not discuss details.

BR board chairman, Kobamelo Kgoboko, told Sunday Standard that the financial director was suspended two weeks ago on allegations of a conflict of interest and added, “I am not in a position to discuss the matter further in the media.”

When contacted for comment, Tobedza said he would neither confirm nor deny the suspension.

However, Tobedza was among candidates competing for the vacant post of CEO.
