It is that time of the year again when party animals from all over the world are spoilt for choice and all weekends leading to Christmas are pretty much spoken for right up until we drag ourselves back to reality.
On Saturday, residents of Gaborone and greater Gaborone will have a chance to party up a storm at this year’s second annual Motswako Invasion which will be held at Masakeng Recreational Park in Morwa village.
For a little background, Motswako is actually a popular Southern African sub genre of hip hop which is alleged to have been started by Botswana’s own Tebogo ‘Normadic’ Mapine. When he created a demo of the genre, it received rave reviews on radio stations across the region. Motswako is mainly comprised of a fusion of rap lyrics in both the local language (Setswana) and English layered on a steady beat. When used in South Africa, other languages used include Zulu, Xhosa and Afrikaans as per the rapper’s origin. The genre gained popularity in the late nineties and went viral with the emergence of artists like Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP).
This Saturday, Batswana will get to experience the best and most current local and international acts in the Motswako industry. A Motswako artist himself, Stoan of Bongo Maffin and Yarona Fm’s Dollar Mac will be the Directors of the event for that night.
Local Motswkao whizz kid Dramaboi, Zeus, Apollo Diablo, Mosako and Kast are just some of the local artists scheduled to perform. International acts to be expected are Tuks Senganga, Kulichana, Dj Tira, just to mention a few. On the decks expect Djs Khenzo, Lemonka, Ricky Lamar, Mr Massie and many more.
Up until 1830hrs, or until the meat runs out, there will be an early bird special where participants will get to feast on a whole beast all for free. So roll up your sleeves and put on your dancing shoes and enjoy this year’s annual Motswako invasion.
