The government is facing potential financial exposure running into billions of Pula after an Ombudsman’s investigation revealed widespread maladministration in the public health system with more than 250 medical negligence lawsuits filed since 2021 seeking damages exceeding P6.5 billion.
According to the Ombudsman’s report, the growing wave of litigation reflects deep-rooted systemic failures within the health sector, including persistent shortages of medicines, malfunctioning or non-existent medical equipment, ambulance deficits, delayed referral systems and deteriorating infrastructure along key referral routes.
