Housemate leaves friend in pub, returns home to steal

Thabo Letsogile, 18, a Form 5 student at Gabane Private School, was this week arraigned before Urban Customary Court President Kgosi Dikwalo Monametsi charged with house breaking and theft. He pleaded guilty to the charges.

The complainant, Gofaone Motsumi, told the Central Police that he and the accused stay at the Village together. He said that he and his housemate, Thabo, went to the University of Botswana to drink beers at the school.

Gofaone said while they were having their drinks, Thabo disappeared and went back to their house at the Prisons House. He, Thabo, knew that Gofaone had some money there and stole P1700, two pairs of new trousers, a bag, four golf T-shirts and a pair of shoes.

State Prosecutor from the Central Police Station, Constable Ditiro Phirinyana, told the court that after the accused was arrested, he denied stealing goods and money from his friend. The police, however, went to search his room at the village found all the stolen goods. Of the P1700 stolen, only P700 was recovered.

In mitigation, Gofaone asked the court not send him to prison because he was young and wanted to finish his studies to become a better person. He pleaded for mercy saying he was a first offender.
Kgosi Monametsi told the court that he would show mercy because the accused was still a young student.

He advised him to stop committing crime.
He sentenced him to one year in jail, wholly suspended for three years for each count, plus eight strokes for all counts.
