The State intends to apply for an extradition against former President Ian Khama with South Africa to answer for charges relating to possession of illegal weapons.
Khama has been in self-imposed exile at Botswana’s neighbour to the south for at least six months.
Khama is charged with 15 counts which include unlawful possession of a special firearm, unlawful possession of a silencer and receiving stolen property.
The State wants Khama to physically appear before court hence its intention to make an application for his extradition to face criminal charges leveled against him.
Khama was the only accused person who was absent in court.
Botswana Police Commissioner Keabetswe Makgophe, former DIS boss Isaac Kgosi, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and Culture Victor Paledi, DIS Deputy Director (Procurement Manager) Sehunelo Khonou all appeared before Broadhurst Magistrate Court charged with possession of arms of war related charges as stipulated under different sections of the Arms and Ammunition Act of 2018.
According to the amended charge sheet, suspended Directorate of Intelligence Services, Deputy Director, Sehunelo Khonou was charged with stealing by a person employed in the public service.
The fifth accused on or about 1st March 2016 at Sir Seretse Khama Airport Cargo handling facility, whilst employed on the Public service stole one Jericho PL 9X10 Drawn sight pistol and its accessories valued at one thousand and seventeen Dollars and Ninety cents (USD 1,017) being the property of the state which currently got into his possession by virtue of his employment.
A charge sheet was read to all the accused persons and a plea was reserved.
The accused persons are expected to appear before court on 30th August 2022.
