A government proposal to let bars and liquor stores operate 24 hours a day is drawing criticism from health experts, who say it could unravel years of progress made under Botswana’s Alcohol Levy which was introduced by former president Ian Khama.
The levy was designed to curb excessive drinking and fund social programs. Since then, the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) has collected more than P4 billion, supporting addiction treatment, road safety, and community health initiatives.
