Lobatse sports fest promises to be an entertainment extravaganza

Lobatse Sports Fest slated for the President’s Holidays in July 15th-17th this year is said to host multiple activities and events meant to promote Lobatse as a destination of choice. The 3 day festival is said to feature a musical festival, beef n beer festival and various sports codes.

At a press conference last week, Founder and Chairperson, Tshepho Bathai said this event is aimed at promoting Lobatse as a destination and to also provide Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) with opportunities that are in Lobatse.

Bathai said the primary beneficiaries will be the people of Lobatse and part of the money generated will be donated to the less privileged members of the Lobatse community.

He also shared that they have put together a beef and beer festival that will happen on a Sunday afternoon over live jazz music.

Bathai said this will be a way of promoting beef since Lobatse has been zoned as a beef city. He added that as a gesture to promote Lobatse as a beef city they will have a mascot.

“Our mascot is going to be different, it is definitely going to be a cow. We are in talks with breeding associations on the type of breed we will be using. This will also be an opportunity to educate people on what the beef city project is about.” He said.

Bathai noted that most events are usually held in Gaborone and Francistown. He said one of the disadvantages about Lobatse is that it does not have enough lodging facilities, hence they have put together a camping site of about 300 tents to compliment the existing facilities.

Youth Activist, Mpheme Mmolai, who is the Programmes Manager said there will be various activities happening at the same time across the town in the 3 day long festival.

Mmolai said starting from April there is going to be a series of activations to promote the festival. She added that there will be plenty of traditional games that will be aimed at promoting various cultures that exist in Botswana.

Local artist Pule “PMag” Magashula who is also the Marketing Coordinator said they intend to unearth talent in Lobatse and expose it. He said they will also involve other artists outside the town to cater for everyone.

Registration is open on the Lobatse Sports Fest Facebook page for those that want to participate at this year’s event.
