Man arrested for running over five-year-old

A speeding motorist was taken in by police after he allegedly knocked down and killed a five-year-old boy at Block 8 location in Francistown.

The Station Commander of Kutlwano Police Station, Israel Tuelo, confirmed the incident to the Telegraph on Monday. He said that they had arrested the driver of the vehicle, whom he said was tested and was found to be drunk.

“This unfortunate incident happened on Saturday along the Kazungula Road in Block 8 location,” Tuelo said. “We arrested the suspect and he is yet to appear before the Francistown Magistrate Court.”

He added that the boy was killed while crossing the road with a group of his friends.
Tuelo said that the driver had not been detained in custody as he is unlikely to abscond.

“I have to plead with motorists to avoid over drinking and driving and I would also love to urge them to drive carefully, especially if there are children along the road,” he said.
