Minister moves to decriminalize sex between homosexuals

The Minister of Justice Ronald Shamukuni last week gazetted a draft amendment to the law that criminalizes consensual sexual intercourse between homosexual couples.

The Bill Penal Code (Amendment Bill) 22 which is expected to be presented to Parliament during the July sitting follows a Court of Appeal decision in 2022 upholding a 2019 ruling that decriminalised gay sex.

The judgement of the apex court effectively struck off two sections of the penal code that had outlawed homosexuality.
