MISA Botswana Mourns the Passing on of Mrs Clara Keanole Olsen

MISA Botswana is deeply saddened by the passing away of a media veteran and an honourable woman, Mme Mma Clara Keanole Olsen. Mma Olsen was a very exceptional and strong individual who was also intelligent, assertive and very confident. She was our mother in media, especially within MISA circles where she was the founding chairperson of MISA Botswana in 1995 as well as Chair of the Regional Governing Council.

MISA Botswana notes with satisfaction, incredible efforts Mme Mma Olsen brought and shared with the local media as well as the region. She saw MISA Botswana grow from just 16 initial members to over a 150 today and become a reputable and ethical organisation. Mma Olsen’s dedication, commitment and burning desire for media freedom in Botswana resulted in MISA membership entrusting her with the Chairmanship position thrice. Over and above these achievements, Mma Olsen was also, twice co-opted on the MISA Regional Governing Council. She was once a Trustee for the Organisation’s Trust Fund Board. Olsen leaves MISA Botswana a much bigger organisation with national, regional and international recognition. She was one of three media people in Botswana conferred the honorary life member of MISA in 2005.

Mme Mma Olsen’s legacy in media, press freedom and freedom of expression coupled with her distinction in running media businesses, will remain in our hearts and minds forever. Her legacy is felt even beyond the Region. MISA Botswana has indeed lost a Press Freedom Fighter and a woman of substance.

We will sorely miss her.
A moya wa ga Mme Mma Olsen o robale ka kagiso

Modise Maphanyane
MISA Botswana Chairperson
