Missing Water Utilities employees feared dead

Three Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) employees who went missing last week at the Gaborone Dam are feared dead and might have been eaten by crocodiles when they were on a routine trip to collect water samples.

The five-seater boat that they were using has also not yet been found.

So far the search has intensified at the dam but there is no clue as to the whereabouts of the three.

WUC spokesperson, Matida Mmipi, said the three employees were on a routine mission to collect water samples at the dam.

She said the employees were using a five-seater boat to collect the water samples.

Mmipi said unfortunately the three employees, whose names are still withheld, did not return from their assignment at the dam until the matter was reported to the police.

“This is a sensitive matter therefore we do not want to speculate what could have happen,” she said.
Mmipi stated that safety is their priority and added that the corporation provides safety clothing to employees as there are regarded part of the uniform.

When asked about the crocodiles at the dam she replied that “to our knowledge there are no crocodiles”.

She said a few years ago there was a rumour that some people saw some crocodiles and a search was conducted but no crocodile was found.

The Station Commander of Naledi Police Station, Superintendent King Tshabe, said they will continue their search until the three are found, dead or alive, as they have brought some hi-tech equipment to assist in the search.

Tshabe said the search has intensified mostly at the dam site and every morning they patrol the dam right round on foot.
