Ombudsman grilled over Khama’s alleged abuse of state property

Kgatleng District councillors this week accused the Ombudsman of turning a blind eye to President Ian Khama’s alleged abuse of office.
Councillors dismissed the Ombudsman as a toothless dog and advised that it should be dissolved. They accused the Ombudsman of not investigating reports that Khama abused Botswana Defence Force helicopters which he uses to address Botswana Democratic Party political rallies.
The council also raised questions about the independence of the Ombudsman. Dudu Leinaeng from the Office of the Ombudsman however assured the council that the Ombudsman is independent and carry their work without influence from anyone.
In the past, opposition parties protested about Khama’s continued piloting of BDF aircrafts especially when attending BDP political functions.┬á Then Vice President of Botswana, Khama would personally fly Botswana Defence Force helicopters. The BCP filed a complaint with the Ombudsman opposing Khama’s actions. However┬áformer President, Festus Mogae insisted at the time that Khama was entitled to ‘official’ transport as the VP.
The opposition raised concern that in the absence of party funding president Khama was using the state properties which disadvantage the opposition which has no resources at their disposal.
