A feared career criminal, who escaped from lawful custody, was last week Friday shot dead by the police after resisting arrest.
Information reaching The Telegraph suggests that about two week ago, Malefo Mabalane, aged 32, escaped from the custody of police near Sebele under mysterious circumstances.
Last week police received a tip off that the sad escapee was around Selajwe, after which the police rushed to where he was spotted.
Upon arrival the police tried to arrest the suspect and he attempted to stab one of the officers trying to arrest him.
According Botswana Police spokesperson Christopher Mbulawa, the escapee was shot dead at Salajwe after escaping from custody, resisting arrest, wielding a knife and threatening to stab the police.
He said the escapee had been on the run since February 5.
“The deceased had been serving a 12-year jail term passed in 2008 for rape and motor vehicle theft, obtaining by false pretences, escaping from lawful custody as well as house breaking,” Mbulawa said.
In a brief interview, Divisional Commander South Senior Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Antony Mokento confirmed the escape from lawful custody of the criminal but said that at the time of going to press, he had yet to receive full details on the Mabalane’s fate.
Meanwhile, police have reported another fatal shooting incident involving a member of the public in Mahalapye. According to Superintendent Amos Kekgathetse, Mahalapye, the Police are investigating a case in which an intruder, alleged to be a 35-year Zimbabwean national, was shot dead while trying to steal from a residential house.
Kekgathetse said after the owner of the house saw the suspect breaking into his house, he collected a shot gun and fired at the suspect, who was rushed to the hospital after sustaining shots to the head and died soon after admission.
In a similar incident, the owner of a house shot at two suspicious occupants of a stationery vehicle in who allegedly jumped into one of the residential houses around Gaborone West in a mission to steal. Although one of the suspects escaped and Police have arrested a suspect aged 34 from Mahalapye, said G-West Station Commander Superintendent, Agreement Mapeu.
