Botswana Police Service, Public Relations Officer Assistant Commissioner, Christopher Mbulawa, has confirmed that police are guarding an injured 23-year-old man of Old Naledi in Princess Marina Hospital after he was allegedly involved in a robbery in the notorious old Industrial area of Gaborone adjacent to Old Naledi.
Asked how the suspect was injured, Mbulawa said that at this stage of investigations they do not have information on that but that they can only confirm that the police had fired a warning shot at the scene of the robbery but are not sure if that is the shot that wounded the suspect.
“We are at the earliest stages of our investigations and cannot confirm what had injured the suspect who had managed to run away from the scene and was finally found hiding in a toilet in Old Naledi,” he said.
Mbulawa could also not disclose what the suspect had taken from the victim.
“Such details will only be known at the end of our investigations,” he said. Eye witnesses on the other hand claim that the victim was robbed of a purse and that it was the police who were called to the crime scene that shot and wounded the suspect.
“There is no doubt that they are the ones who have shot and wounded the suspect,” claims a witness who said he was not far away from the scene of the crime.
It is the second time in two weeks that security agents have shot suspected robbers in the Old Naledi area which is said to be terrorized by criminal gangs that snatch valuables from people.
