President Khama takes on local celebrities in Fat Boy Challenge

It was an afternoon of sweat, fun, frustration and exercise as His Excellency President Ian Khama, a fitness fanatic in his own right, gave a group of local celebrities a run for their money on Friday when he accepted an invitation to participate in an obstacle challenge task for an episode of the ongoing annual Yarona Fm FatBoy Challenge that is currently aired on eBotswana TV every Tuesday evening.

The event was held at the Sir Seretse Khama Barracks in Mogoditshane and featured musicians, radio and TV presenters, deejays, and comedians who were all amazed by the swiftness shown by His Excellency as he manoeuvred through some of the most gruelling obstacles that many contestants failed to complete.

The president would later joke that he was pleased that there were journalists as well because, “they are always making fun and laughing at me but today I could laugh at them”.

He was referring to participants who could not clear the obstacles that he did.

Stressing the importance of a healthy lifestyle, Khama warned that life’s many challenges can only be overcome by being mentally and physically fit.

Khama, who says he thinks of himself as ‘an older youth’, said he hoped his taking part in the challenge would encourage the youth to do the same.

The president also stressed the importance of healthy eating. Sharing his diet with the press, the president says for breakfast some mornings he would have just fruits, sometimes yoghurt and cereals; lunch is either meat, fish and chicken while for supper he makes do with fruits and vegetables.

The annual Yarona FM Fat Boy Challenge is a Corporate Social Responsibility project, aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, with a focus on regular exercise.

Proceeds of the project will be direct to a charity of the contestants’ choice.
