Rollers, Chiefs Blockbuster Reopens National Stadium to Football

The long-awaited reopening of the National Stadium to football activities starts today, Sunday 13th April 2025, with a premier league clash between arch-rivals Township Rollers and Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

Clashes between the two sides have always been crowd pullers, and this one will be no different. Both Rollers and Chiefs, currently in position four and five respectively in the FNB Premiership, are among this season’s title contenders.

Hosting the clash at the National Stadium will also come as a relief for the Botswana Football League (BFL). Facilities around the city have so far proved incapable of accommodating some of its high category games. This left the BFL in dire situation when dealing with crowds at the games and posed a threat to supporters’ safety.

Now after four months of closure for renovations, the iconic facility is ready to host its first match, and it doesn’t get any bigger than this. And in this hallowed ground of Botswana football, the two giants of Botswana football will go head-to-head in a match brimming with promise—drama, intensity, and high-stakes action. This isn’t just a game; it’s a fierce rivalry, a battle for pride, and a pivotal moment in the title race.

Only three points separate the two teams. Fourth placed Rollers, currently on 46 points, will be now be aiming to create distance between them and Chiefs, whilst also boosting their title chances. For Magosi, the match will present them an ample chance to get on equal points with Rollers and reassert their championship ambitions.

With pride and title fate at stake, football supporters from across the country, neutrals included, are expected to descend upon the stadium. With both clubs known for entertaining football and each still in the hunt for league honours, the atmosphere promises to be electric.

“It’s good news that the National Stadium is now available. All remaining category A games will be held there to manage crowds, as we prioritize the safety of supporters and other stakeholders involved,” BFL spokesperson Mosimanegape Tshoswane said when confirming the importance of the national stadium’s availability.

He added that while there is currently no formal agreement with the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC), discussions are ongoing to establish a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Club officials have welcomed the stadium’s reopening, expressing optimism that the venue will lift player morale and enhance the overall match-day experience for fans. Security and logistical plans have been finalized to ensure safe and smooth access to the stadium.

As the teams gear up for this critical showdown, the air around the stadium is charged with excitement. Training grounds have been buzzing with intensity, with both coaching teams fine-tuning strategies. Star players from both sides are expected to step up and deliver performances worthy of the occasion.

Whether it’s the sea of blue and gold for Rollers or the passionate black and white of the Chiefs, one thing is certain: the return of football to the National Stadium promises to be an unforgettable spectacle.
