Wherever human beings gather as a community, there is bound to be trade happening or some exchange of some sort. This is exactly what happened in the early days of Botswana’s capital. The history of commerce in the first ten to fifteen years is quite interesting.
The establishment of the capital was such a tremendous economic boast to the surrounding villages of Tlokweng, Gabane, Metsimotlhabe, Mmopane, Oodi and Matebele. These villages are within commutable walking distance and the residents here used to walk into the capital on its early days to do shopping.
There were very few shops in those villages to begin with and if any it was just a lone shop like in places like Matebele and Mmopane. To begin with, the local village shops were a bit overpriced. Getting to the capital was such relief.
