On May 25, 2007, Multichoice celebrated Africa Day at the GICC by highlighting African content on the Dstv bouquet. AfricaMagic, Dstv’s movie channel dedicated to African cinema, has extended its 7 hours daily broadcasting to 24 hours.
Multichoice’s Public Relations Officer, Tshepo Maphanyane, especially underscored Batswana who have made personal strides on Dstv programs. She mentioned Kaone Kario’s Nokia Face of Africa 2005 victory and Keamogetse Basima’s participation the following year. She spoke of Tebbie Gasennelwe’s Survivor Africa triumph and of Mpho ‘Mr Doe’ Mmono’s Channel 0, ‘Best Southern African Male’ Award.
Sthandwa Mmopi appears on Studio 53 as co-anchor alongside former Big Brother Africa contestant Gaetano Kigawa. She previously was a field reporter on the programme but before then a VJ on Btv’s only music show, Flavour Dome. Batswana who have been profiled on Dstv include architect Dillie Matenge, and Odirile ‘Vee’ Sento, who most recently, brought a filming crew from MNet to Botswana to film an autobiographical feature.
Btv news anchor, Reginald Richardson, has also been nominated for the CNN Multichoice African Journalist awards, where he will be judged alongside other nominees across Africa.
Maphanyane is also assured that a Motswana will be present in Big Brother Africa following Warona Setshwaelo’s stay in the house, when the 24 hour programme premiers on the August 5, 2007.
