Renowned Telegraph columnist, Sonny Serite, was a runner up at the CNN Multichoice African Journalist of the Year awards.
Serite’s column, No Holds Barred, has won him accolades throughout the country, and he commands a very large following within and without Botswana.
Serite soared even more over the weekend when he narrowly lost out to South African online newspaper Dispatch Online at the CNN awards. Dispatch Online, which prides itself as South Africa’s most award winning online newspaper, is over 100 years old and has been at the forefront of exposing injustices in the region. They were the first to publish a colour photograph of a battered Steve Biko the day after he died in police custody. Serite won himself a number of goodies for his commendable efforts, among them a P20 000 cash prize, a Blackberry Smartphone, CNN regalia and other goodies. He was also given a letter of commendation signed by the Vice President of CNN.
“I am very excited and honoured by this great achievement. It shows that my work on No Holds Barred is attracting attention, and it inspires me to work harder in future,” said Serite.
The CNN awards are the most prestigious and respected in Africa. Their objective is to reinforce the role of journalists in Africa’s development and to reward, recognize and encourage journalistic talent.
