It’s a cliché I know. But the Silent Assassin is a title I gave to Minister Dumezweni Meshack Mthimkhulu during the launch of two more channels for BTV in 2022. By then he was still the Assistant Minister in the Ministry for State President. I was fascinated by his tenacity in challenging us civil servants especially in the delivery of projects. He was always probing and was not easily convinced by the flowery language we often implore when briefing officials.
It is the same tenacity that he consistently demonstrated to the Western capitals in his assignment as Minister of Environment and Tourism as he pushed Botswana’s position in the face of plans by the West to ban imports of trophy hunting into Europe. This would deal a blow to Botswana’s conservation efforts which include hunting as part of the mix.
