National team coach, Stanley Tshosane, has named his 23-men squad to represent Botswana at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that gets underway in two weeks time.
Most of the players in the squad are the ones that have been active in the past matches. However, notable players the coach has dropped are the trio of Abedinico Powell, Sekhana Koko (Township Rollers) and Mokhathi Mokhathi. It is not surprising for Mokgathi and Powell to be dropped because they have been in and out of the squad.
But the exclusion of Koko is the one that has got many people talking because he was always outstanding when given a chance. Koko is also a fast winger, a strong point of the Zebras.
Players who should consider themselves lucky to be retained are Othusitse Pilane (Mochudi Centre Chiefs), Monametsi Sunday Kelebale (Nico United) and Mogakolodi ‘Tsotso’ Ngele.
These three players were not regulars in the national team since the campaign for 2012 AFCON started.
Kelebale, on the other hand, once had a long term injury and has never been active in the senior national team.
Ngele has always been outstanding at club level but was never given the chance he deserves while Pilane has always struggled in the national team. He has not really been himself for the past two years.
However, the players seem to possess certain skills the coach wants.
Meanwhile, Mochudi Centre Chiefs are leading the pack in terms of the number of players in the team. They have four players, followed by Township Rollers, Gaborone United and BDF XI who have three players apiece. Other teams have two or one player in the team.
Looking at the players Tshosane named for the team, he is going to play a defensive game as was the case in the qualifiers. He has picked several defensive midfielders and there is almost no ball player.
Below is the full squad that will represent Botswana.
