The outgoing Commissioner of Police, Thebeyame Tsimako, has urged police officers and clusters to be more committed in fighting crime for the country to attract investors.
Addressing clusters and officers during his ongoing farewell tour in Ghanzi, Tsabong and Kanye recently, Tsimako warned them that high crime levels scare away potential investors leading to a slow growth of the economy.
He further said that the relocation of the diamond manufacturing industry from the United Kingdom to Botswana which is expected to be completed soon is a challenge for them to stay committed to the fight against crime. He said that failure to control crime by the police and the public may compromise security of the lucrative diamond industry.
He implored them to come up with creative ways of fighting crime rather than jut relying on old ideas that may not be relevant to today’s dynamic challenges.
For his part the Southern Division Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Oreeditse Mautle praised the outgoing Commissioner for his selfless service to the nation despite the challenges that he went through.
Mautle cited last year’s civil service strike and facilitation of the merger between Botswana Police and the former local police as some of the challenges that the outgoing Commissioner faced and managed to overcome.
Tsimako is retiring at the end of this month after 42 years of service. The President has appointed Keabetswe Makgophe to succeed him. (Botswana Police Service)
