To refashion a slogan that the BDP is using this election cycle, it won’t be easy for [President Mokgweetsi] Masisi when he leaves office. That is because two parties, a top-tier agro company and Masisi’s first Permanent Secretary to the President, have put him on notice about the lawsuits they plan to bring against him when he loses the presidential immunity that he currently enjoys.
Last month, Champrimo Botswana Group of Companies put Masisi on notice about what sounds like intellectual property theft. The company says that when Masisi learnt that the company planned to relocate the United Arab Emirates – having adjudged the UAE to be more suitable for serving an international clientele, he dissuaded its directors against such relocation. He reportedly told them that they should serve their clients from Botswana and help make Botswana a centre of excellence in livestock value chains; transfer their capabilities, knowledge and intellectual property to the nation for the ownership and benefit of farmers. The president explained that the latter would spur national economic transformation and economic impact to support his new national development agenda. He also implored the company to hold off business that it was doing with the governments of some SADC member states.
