Our 58-year history as an independent republic is anchored on pragmatism. That comes to the fore much more prominently when you look at our relationship with neighbouring countries during the heydays of the liberation struggle in Southern Africa. We did not actively house members of the Zimbabwean liberation movements on our territory. However, that did not stop us from bearing the brunt of frequent incursions by the erstwhile Rhodesian security forces.
