The responsibility mothers have today has never required more vigilance; more than at any time in the history of the world, mothers know their position and what society expects from them.
Botswana has become synonymous with single parenting, divorce and lack of sincere partnerships between men and women, a clear testimony of society losing its hold on the moral standards.
In the midst of these challenges, women in Botswana once again seek to reposition themselves in the community as the pillars of strength, as mothers who are success driven with decency and integrity as was their pride as Batswana women before.
Addressing women at FEMINITY 1st conference, Thapelo Phuthego, the Deputy Director at Gender Affairs said, to rightfully position themselves in society, women should look up to their God.
“Womanhood is a gift that God chose for a part of His image in the lineage of Eve,” she said.
Phuthego added that today’s women have to play various roles, which include being biological daughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, aunts, mothers, wives as well as being career persons. This has created a lot of pressure on them as they have to effectively play these various roles successfully.
She said women should strive to be the woman of Proverbs 31 in the Bible, a virtuous woman whom Solomon says is worth more than rubies.
“In order for one to excel in the above listed roles of a woman, they need inner strength and resilience and this cannot be obtained anywhere except from the maker of humankind,” she said.
In spite of these challenges, Phuthego said women should not divert from unleashing their potential but should stand for what is right.
“I believe that it is time that women assume their positions in society and this will make the world a better place to live in,” she said.
Phuthego added that the beautiful creation of a woman is highly significant in that women and men are both needed in life.
“This should teach us that it is possible for women and men to co-exist as they were meant to be together right from creation,” she said.
